To make good air quality possible in the country, and control carbon emission, National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has mobilised agencies for the implementation of National Vehicular Emission Control Programme (NVECP) scheduled for this month in the country.

The agencies that would involve in the implementation include Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Vehicle Inspection Officers and National Union of Road Transport Workers that doubles as members of its board.

The programme, which is already implemented in developed countries will help reduce organic pollutants in stationary and mobile vehicles.

NESREA Director-General, Dr Lawrence Anukam, who disclosed this at interactive session with Stakeholders and potential operators of the programme in Abuja, said NVECP is designed to provide good quality air for its citizenry, adding this is to ensure hitch-free launch at the final stages.

He also expressed his delight that the first pilot phase which has taken them months of careful planning, would commence in Abuja, the Federal Capital, before the nationwide launch.

“This is going to involve a lot of public enlightenment and sensitization to ensure the success of the programme. This is in collaboration with other sectors of the government.  We are convinced that by full participation the success of this programme is guaranteed,” he added.

Dr. Anukam further explained that what is needed is proper enforcement to ensure that the level of emission is brought under control. “The operational guidelines and regulations are now in place for the smooth conduct of this programme”.
