LASG directs land owners to shun tenement, ground rent payment

—THE Lagos State Government has directed owners of properties who have been administered Charge Demand Notice not to pay for rate and Ground rent in accordance with the law establishing the Land Use charge.

This came as the state government said it has  extended the discount window for payment of Land Use Charge to April 14, 2017.

Land Use Charge is a consolidation of all and land based rates and charges payable under the Land Rates Law, the Neighbourhood Improvement Charge Law and Tenement Rates Law in Lagos State.

In a statement by the Director Public Affairs of Ministry of , Mrs. Modupe Ileyemi, the directive became necessary in order to boost payment of Land Use Charge by residents.

“Section 22 of the Land Use Charge Law clearly states that, “On and from the date when Land Use Charge is levied on a property in accordance with this Law, the provisions of the Assessment Law, Land Rates Law, Neighbourhood Improvement Charge Law and Tenement Rates Law and any amendments made pursuant to it shall cease to apply to that property.

“It is important to note that late payment or non-payment of the Charge on an annual basis will attract accrued penalties and accumulation of arrears. Thus, prompt payment is strongly advised.” Ileyemi stated.

On the extension of window for payment, government said the measure, aimed at allowing residents further grace on the benefit of 15 percent discount on 2017 bills.
