Is there a difference between the suburbs in New Jersey and the suburbs on Long Island? I am trying to get an idea of the cost of living outside of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. My goal is to live in a place that is more of a community geared to a laid back lifestyle. I know living in New Jersey or Long Island I will have to commute into Manhattan, so I will have to add that into my monthly cost of living budget. I used similar 1 bedroom apartment rentals<\/a> in both locations to determine the better option.<\/p>\n

Greybarn, Amityville, Long Island<\/strong>\t\t\n\t\t<\/p>\n

A nice apartment community with plenty of space both inside and outside. A 1 bedroom is around $2450 per month with 830sqft in the apartment. The kitchens have stainless steel appliances, a breakfast bar type counter facing the living area, plenty of cabinet space. The apartment has hardwood floors, a washer\/dryer, and large windows with solar shades. The clubhouse is where all of the activities take place. They have a fitness center, a kitchen and common eating area for large group parties, a pool table and shuffleboard, a fireplace, and comfy chairs to sit and socialize. Outdoors social areas include a swimming pool, fire pits, barbecues, and a bocce court. The commute from Amityville to Penn Station takes about an hour.<\/p>\n

The Commons at Upper Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, NJ<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Commons, I could get a 2 bedroom apartment starting at $2350 per month with 1200sqft of living space. The apartments have wall-to-wall carpet, energy<\/a> efficient appliances, and washer\/dryer sets in each unit. The property has walking trails, jogging paths, and a pond, but doesn’t have a clubhouse like the one at Greybarn. The Commons is a pet free community, so to me that is a deal breaker. The commute from USR into Midtown is a bit longer by about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

It’s a tough choice between the two communities, but I think Greybarn would be a better fit in my current situation.<\/p>\n
