US President Donald Trump unleashed a spectacular denunciation of one of his closest political allies Wednesday, describing his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon as insane and irrelevant.<\/p>\n

The statement from the president came after the release of explosive excerpts from a new book about the Trump White House, in which Bannon describes a meeting between Trump\u2019s son Don Jr and a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential election campaign as \u201ctreasonous\u201d and \u201cunpatriotic.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind,\u201d Trump said in a statement that was notably abrasive, even for America\u2019s combative 45th president.<\/p>\n

Trump said Bannon \u2014 who engineered the New York real estate<\/a> mogul\u2019s link to the nationalist far right and helped create a pro-Trump media ecosystem \u2014 was \u201conly in it for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The book \u2014 the \u201cFire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,\u201d by journalist Michael Wolff \u2014 is to be published next week.<\/p>\n

But both The Guardian and New York magazine released excerpts that also touch on the presidential ambitions of Trump\u2019s daughter Ivanka \u2014 and which say that Trump himself<\/strong> did not believe he would defeat Clinton.<\/p>\n

Bannon, who left the White House in August, is also quoted as saying that the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election will focus on money laundering.<\/p>\n

The investigation by Mueller, a former FBI director, is looking into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to get him elected \u2014 a charge the president has repeatedly and vehemently denied.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018You should have called the FBI\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n

Don Jr took the June 9, 2016 meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya after an intermediary promised material that would incriminate Trump\u2019s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner and then campaign chairman Paul Manafort also attended the meeting at Trump Tower in New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor -\u2013 with no lawyers,\u201d Bannon was quoted as saying in the book. \u201cThey didn\u2019t have any lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it\u2019s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018Little to do\u2019 with election win \u2013<\/p>\n

Trump responded quickly and cuttingly to the reported comments by Bannon, a former investment banker and the executive chairman of influential ultraconservative outlet Breitbart News.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn\u2019t as easy as I make it look. Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolff\u2019s book \u2014 which he says is based on interviews with Trump, his senior aides and others \u2014 also mentions that Trump did not initially know who former House speaker John Boehner was, and that he eats food from McDonald\u2019s because he believes it to be safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis book is filled with false and misleading accounts from individuals who have no access or influence with the White House,\u201d said Trump\u2019s press secretary Sarah Sanders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
