Shows like Mad Men may have capitalised on the popularity of mid-century design, but the swinging sixties look isn\u2019t for everyone as Brisbane parents Margie and Grayson Tyndale know all too well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Four years ago, this Jindalee couple bought a mid-century home with a pool and a view, yet now that they have two young daughters they find their home doesn\u2019t suit their lifestyle.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got some really strong mid-century bones and it\u2019s just not really cut out for the modern family\u2026it\u2019s still just so brown,\u201d says Margie.<\/p>\n

When the house was first built in\u00a01969, it was offered as a prize in a competition in a women\u2019s magazine and Grayson insists the home could still be updated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to stay in this house, I see it\u2019s potential and I want to realise it,\u201d Grayson says.<\/p>\n

Andrew Winter and\u00a0Neale Whitaker hosts of\u00a0Love It Or List It Australia\u00a0<\/em>take a look at the property and offer<\/a> their advice.<\/p>\n

List it: Why now is a good time to sell<\/h2>\n

Winter says this mid-century home is \u201can ugly shed\u2019 and he thinks the Tyndales could upgrade to something more modern.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall, poky rooms everywhere I look.\u00a0 I can find them something so much better than this, this was designed for a bygone era,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The current median price for a three-bedroom home\u00a0in Jindalee is $532,000 and the Tyndale\u2019s current home is valued at $590,000.<\/p>\n

But can Winter find this couple another four bedroom home with two bathrooms, two living areas and a pool that\u2019s still close to the city?<\/p>\n

Love it: Updating a retro home<\/h2>\n

Whitaker says this home has potential and the main issue isn\u2019t even the mid-century design.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now I\u2019m thinking it\u2019s not so much the sixties styling that\u2019s the problem here \u2013 it\u2019s the floorplan, it really is all over the place,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Homes built in the 1960s also bring their own challenges and in this case, Whitaker says part of the reno would need to be spent on getting rid of the asbestos<\/a> that was used to build the home.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll is not lost.\u00a0 I mean upstairs you are going to have an immaculate new home with two new bathrooms, a brand new kitchen.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to feel very different to the way it does now,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cStreamlining the kitchen so that it flows into one with the dining area, creates a space any cook would be happy in, \u201d he says.<\/p>\n
