Matt fell for the house the minute he clapped eyes on it and his love has only grown stronger for it as the years have gone by.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fell in love with it straight away,\u201d Matt says. \u201cI felt at home here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He likes the property\u2019s homely, lived-in feel and is very happy living in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

Natalie is sick of the dated \u201850s kitchen, drawers that always jam and not having enough storage space \u2013 which with a family of five is hardly surprising.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverywhere I look there\u2019s things to fix, I like character but not falling to bits!\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe girls are getting bigger, too, so we\u2019re starting to need more space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Natalie is also feeling a strong pull to Brisbane where a lot of her family and friends live.<\/p>\n

The three-bedroom house is located in\u00a0Coburg North, a popular suburb in Melbourne\u2019s north and is currently valued at $850,000.<\/p>\n

Revamping an older home can be costly and time-consuming, especially if you\u2019re not a dab hand at DIY.<\/p>\n

The median price for a three-bedroom home like this one is currently $786,900.<\/p>\n

A decent renovation and boosting the number of bedrooms from three to five could push the value of the house up to $1 million.<\/p>\n

Matt and Natalie have enjoyed many happy years raising their three young daughters in the house \u2013 but the question is, can it continue to grow with them or have the family simply outgrown it?<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have to move on,\u201d says Winter, who feels the family are better off selling rather than trying to transform this home.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me this house, other than the living room, doesn\u2019t have a single redeeming feature,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Love it: This could be their forever home<\/strong><\/h2>\n

But Whitaker says the house could still become a forever home, with the right kind of renovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of clutter and the current layout is like a maze,\u201d says Whitaker.<\/p>\n

But ever the optimist, he adds: \u201cIt could be a five-bedroom house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The home has some great existing period features and isn\u2019t short on character or natural light, so there is potential for a dazzling makeover.<\/p>\n

Natalie and Matt have a budget of $120,000.<\/p>\n

Top of the list is a new kitchen, another bathroom, sensible storage, a more practical layout and a bedroom for each of the girls, plus a guest room.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can envisage a beautiful, modern and functional home,\u201d says Whitaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s going to be tough,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n

Reworking a clumsy floor plan and opening up the existing space would completely transform the home, adding flow, space and light \u2013 not to mention much-needed extra bedrooms and bathrooms.<\/p>\n
