America overall is a compassionate nation. In 2015, Americans donated more than $373 billion to charities, a record high, according to Giving USA.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. is a generous country,\u201d says\u00a0William Chopik, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, who co-authored research\u00a0about nations and empathy<\/a>. \u201cAmerica is always coming to other countries\u2019 aid whenever there\u2019s a disaster. And hand in hand with that, we also have an unusually high volunteering rate.\u201d<\/p>\n

But some cities seem to be more caring than others. Realtor<\/a>.com\u00ae\u2019s research team sought to find out the most compassionate cities in the country, ranking 250 of the largest cities on factors such as percentage of income donated, volunteer rate, public charities per capita, percentage of people working in social services or nonprofit organizations, and more.<\/p>\n

The following cities are the most caring, according to realtor.com\u00ae\u2019s analysis:<\/p>\n

  2. Ann Arbor, Mich.<\/li>\n
  3. Richmond, Va.<\/li>\n
  4. Durham, N.C.<\/li>\n
  5. Charleston, S.C.<\/li>\n
  6. Atlanta, Ga.<\/li>\n
  7. Alexandria, Va.<\/li>\n
  8. Birmingham, Ala.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
