Picture: Getty<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Joe Lopino, executive director of the Australian <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/best-furniture-pieces-for-your-home-and-office\/\">Furniture<\/a> Removers Association (AFRA), the professional body for furniture removalists, says his members know more about planning a move than most.<\/p>\n<p>Lopino says the company has built its removal checklist over many years. It includes many tricks of the trade, like creating a floor plan of the new premises to help with planning, when to get rid of garden chemicals, paints, fuel and other flammable items and more.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Six weeks until moving day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Start a file for moving documents.<\/li>\n<li>Book removalist.<\/li>\n<li>Research insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Create a floor plan of new property and plan placement of furniture.<\/li>\n<li>Assess current furniture and arrange to sell items not required at new place.<\/li>\n<li>Plan packing. Discuss needs with removalist.<\/li>\n<li>Organise delivery of boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Organise moving supplies, such as tape, labels, markers etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Two weeks until moving day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the garden, garage, shed and under house for items to be packed, thrown away etc.<\/li>\n<li>Hold a garage sale or speak to removalist about getting rid of unwanted items.<\/li>\n<li>Use up all frozen food, unless moving locally.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of garden chemicals, paints, fuel and other flammable items, as suggested by supplier.<\/li>\n<li>Get BBQ cylinders professionally purged.<\/li>\n<li>Make arrangements to have pets looked after for at least two days before move. If moving interstate, book a pet transporter.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure pets are vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>Arrange school and childcare transfers.<\/li>\n<li>If a DIY move, start packing.<\/li>\n<li>Label every carton and identify by room and keep a separate list of contents.<\/li>\n<li>Notify family, friends and businesses of change of address.<\/li>\n<li>If any furniture needs to be dismantled before move, begin to do it this week. Put all bolts and screws and other small attachments into a small self-sealing bag and tape to the base of the item or label clearly and put all in one box.<\/li>\n<li>If travelling any distance by car on moving day, ensure it\u2019s checked.<\/li>\n<li>Arrange telephone, electricity, gas and water supplies for new property.<\/li>\n<li>Return library items and things borrowed from friends.<\/li>\n<li>If moving a boat or trailer, ensure all items inside are secured.<\/li>\n<li>Buy a street directory of the new city or town, if required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>One week until moving day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrange mail redirection.<\/li>\n<li>Cancel and re-arrange newspapers and any other deliveries.<\/li>\n<li>Re-confirm travel arrangements for vehicles and care for pets.<\/li>\n<li>Make a list of things to do on moving day.<\/li>\n<li>If moving a waterbed, prepare as per manufacturers\u2019 directions.<\/li>\n<li>Remove batteries from battery-powered items going into storage.<\/li>\n<li>If taking any light fittings, arrange with electrician for disconnection.<\/li>\n<li>Drain fuel from lawn mower and empty other containers.<\/li>\n<li>Check cut-off or final reading dates for electricity, water, phone and gas.<\/li>\n<li>Collect anything being repaired or on <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/fast-flexible-real-estate-loans-usa\/\">loan<\/a> to friends and family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Two days until moving day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrange necessary finances for payments on moving day.<\/li>\n<li>If travelling by car, check oil, water and tyres.<\/li>\n<li>Pack luggage or items needed immediately after moving.<\/li>\n<li>Collect dry cleaning.<\/li>\n<li>Do the laundry; fold, and pack.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of remaining chemicals, flammables and garbage. Do not tip poisons down the drain.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure all jars, bottles and cans containing non-flammable liquids are tightly sealed and packed in waterproof containers or plastic bags.<\/li>\n<li>If keeping blinds or curtains, take these down now and pack.<\/li>\n<li>Finish packing. Ensure all items are on inventory and each box is numbered and matches inventory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Day before move<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Be ready for professional packers to arrive. This is normally done the day before the move.<\/li>\n<li>Defrost and clean out fridge and freezer. Check with manufacturer if the fridge motor needs to be specially secured.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of food that is open or will go off soon.<\/li>\n<li>Wash and dry all dishes ready for packing.<\/li>\n<li>Clean out medicine cabinet and dispose of unwanted drugs.<\/li>\n<li>Check all drawers and remove items that are heavy, breakable or hold liquid.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare washing machine according to manufacturers\u2019 directions.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare waterbed for packing.<\/li>\n<li>Leave forwarding address and contact number for new owners.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the police and neighbours if the property being vacated will be empty for long period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Moving day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure removalist knows where parking is available at new property.<\/li>\n<li>Walk around the house with the removalist, explaining what needs to be done and what will be needed first, so they can pack these items last.<\/li>\n<li>Pack a survival kit with toiletries, tea, coffee, milk, water, personal items, first aid kit, spare clothing, tea towels and other dish cleaning equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure pets are confined and keep children out of removalists\u2019 way.<\/li>\n<li>Collect all house keys.<\/li>\n<li>Make a final check of all cupboards, cabinets and storage areas to make sure nothing has been left behind.<\/li>\n<li>Make a final check in all sheds and the garden area.<\/li>\n<li>Before the removalist leaves, walk around and check all areas.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off the power to the house, tighten all taps and make sure gas and all electrical switches are off.<\/li>\n<li>Lock all doors and windows.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget the cat\/dog\/fish!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a hre=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/advice\/move-house-like-a-pro\/\">Realestate au <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If there\u2019s ever a time to embrace a comprehensive checklist, it\u2019s when moving house.
