Most people aren\u2019t aware of the revolution right now, but that will change as the cost of alternative sources of energy, such as solar panels, plummets and the use of smart technologies\u2014particularly LED lighting\u2014goes mainstream.<\/p>\n<table align=\"right\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" cellspacing=\"5\" style=\"width: 400px;\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/realtormag.realtor.org\/sites\/realtormag.realtor.org\/files\/rmo_files\/images\/2017_may\/Sustainable_Mendenhall.jpg\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 266px;\"\/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td><em>NAR President-elect Elizabeth Mendenhall joins other REALTORS\u00ae at NAR\u2019s 2017 Sustainability Summit to discuss how changes in the energy sector will affect consumers\u2019 homebuying needs.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u201cSmart cities are already here, but they\u2019re unevenly distributed right now,\u201d said Geoffrey Kasselman, executive managing director of commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/property-center-nigeria\/\">real estate<\/a> advisory firm Newmark Knight Frank. Kasselman and other experts were on hand at the summit to give real estate professionals a better understanding of how sweeping changes in energy use and technology will impact what people want in their homes and communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers are already telling us they want sustainable features in their home,\u201d NAR President-elect Elizabeth Mendenhall said at the meeting. \u201cWhat consumers don\u2019t know is how to make their home more energy-efficient and what to ask for, and that\u2019s where REALTORS\u00ae can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"4.8342857142857\">\n<p><strong>Prepare for Change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real estate industry will be on the front lines of changing energy needs as they occur. Stay ahead of the curve with NAR\u2019s 2017 sustainability report.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the developments speakers talked about at the summit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Innovation districts.<\/strong> These are already in place in some parts of the country. They use alternative energy sources and digital technologies to manage energy use in homes, <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/nigeria-property-center\/\">commercial properties<\/a>, and infrastructure to create sustainable live, work, and play clusters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Micro homes.<\/strong> These are typically between 250 and 450 square feet and help make <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/sell-your-home-online-fast\/\">housing<\/a> affordable in high-cost urban areas so people in modest-paying jobs can live where they work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LED street lighting.<\/strong> These are more than lights. They double as digital sensors so cities can manage traffic, parking, and infrastructure needs more efficiently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re transitioning from a petroleum- to a solar-based global economy,\u201d Kasselman said. \u201cWe might never see a barrel of oil over $50 again.
