The United States is going through an energy<\/a> revolution that within 20 years will reshape people\u2019s homes and communities, experts said at the National Association of REALTORS\u00ae\u2019 2017 Sustainability Summit in Washington, D.C., this week. Most people aren\u2019t aware of the revolution right now, but that will change as the cost of alternative sources of energy, such as solar panels, plummets and the use of smart technologies\u2014particularly LED lighting\u2014goes mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

NAR President-elect Elizabeth Mendenhall joins other REALTORS\u00ae at NAR\u2019s 2017 Sustainability Summit to discuss how changes in the energy sector will affect consumers\u2019 homebuying needs.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u201cSmart cities are already here, but they\u2019re unevenly distributed right now,\u201d said Geoffrey Kasselman, executive managing director of commercial real estate<\/a> advisory firm Newmark Knight Frank. Kasselman and other experts were on hand at the summit to give real estate professionals a better understanding of how sweeping changes in energy use and technology will impact what people want in their homes and communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers are already telling us they want sustainable features in their home,\u201d NAR President-elect Elizabeth Mendenhall said at the meeting. \u201cWhat consumers don\u2019t know is how to make their home more energy-efficient and what to ask for, and that\u2019s where REALTORS\u00ae can help.\u201d<\/p>\n
