{"id":5493,"date":"2017-07-27T18:27:07","date_gmt":"2017-07-27T18:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/youths-are-frustrated-to-a-level-that-they-cannot-do-anything-adama-barrow\/"},"modified":"2017-07-27T18:27:07","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T18:27:07","slug":"youths-are-frustrated-to-a-level-that-they-cannot-do-anything-adama-barrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/youths-are-frustrated-to-a-level-that-they-cannot-do-anything-adama-barrow\/","title":{"rendered":"Youths are frustrated to a level that they cannot do anything \u2013 Adama Barrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"description\" readability=\"165\">\n<p>Six months ago, businessman and political novice Adama Barrow took power in Africa\u2019s smallest mainland country after delivering a stunning defeat against ex-leader Yahya Jammeh, who had ruled brutally for 22 years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_740944\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/d19lga30codh7.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Barrow-e1491563494646.jpg?resize=412%2C322\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/d19lga30codh7.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"322\" class=\"size-full wp-image-740944\"\/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/d19lga30codh7.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Barrow-e1491563494646.jpg?resize=412%2C322\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"322\" class=\"size-full wp-image-740944\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adama Barrow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Barrow finally took power in The Gambia in late January after a prolonged political crisis, the euphoria soon turned to grim recognition that Jammeh had more or less cleaned out the nation\u2019s coffers before leaving for exile in Equatorial Guinea, he tells AFP in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe inherited an economy that was virtually empty,\u201d Barrow recalls. \u201cWith one month import cover \u2014 and that is very, very serious \u2014 our domestic and foreign debt was at highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- between content ad --><\/p>\n<p>The European Union and World Bank swooped in to help the new administration to the tune of $56 million \u2014 just $6 million more than the government now accuses Jammeh of stealing by diverting <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/get-quick-loan-for-real-estate-investment\/\">funds<\/a> intended for national telecoms into his own accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Barrow says the nation can now cover its import costs \u2014 a key measure of economic health \u2014 for three months, that food prices are down, and that investors spooked by Jammeh\u2019s tendency to announce herbal cures for AIDS, among other things, are showing strong interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of goodwill from around the world. And they have expressed interest in doing business with The Gambia,\u201d he says, looking relaxed in a traditional west African \u201cboubou\u201d tunic coloured a bright turquoise. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just the Chinese and (former colonisers) the British, but Dubai, and others like the French,\u201d Barrow says. \u201cIt is now up to The Gambia to make the best out of these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also notes an interest in opening up the nascent mining sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Jammeh to \u2018face justice\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A former <a href=\"https:\/\/amazingproperty.com.ng\/blog\/property-center-nigeria\/\">real estate<\/a> agent and developer, Barrow, a physically imposing but softly-spoken father of four, is most at ease talking business, enthusiastically discussing the development of Banjul\u2019s long neglected port and an expired petroleum licence he wants to open up to new bidders.<\/p>\n<p>But while Gambians desperately want job creation and infrastructure, the wounds of the past are fresh.<\/p>\n<p>The families of those disappeared by Jammeh\u2019s security services, beaten by his police or who had their businesses seized want trials, and quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Jammeh) was the head of everything: atrocities, wealth, everything. We will investigate it all,\u201d Barrow insists.<\/p>\n<p>But how would he extract Jammeh from Equatorial Guinea \u2014 a notoriously secretive nation that is not a member of the International Criminal Court?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people who committed atrocities and faced justice. They were extradited to face justice. It can also happen with Jammeh,\u201d Barrow maintains, placing his faith in commissions overseen by a justice minister who served on the Rwanda genocide tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>The president has ordered one commission to look into Jammeh and his associates\u2019 embezzlement of state funds, and a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should begin holding hearings into crimes committed by the security forces by the end of the year. <\/p>\n<p>These two bodies are aimed at healing the nation, but also paving the way for future legal cases.<\/p>\n<p>Barrow says he is rather bored of hearing that his life and the security of The Gambia are at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are reports that people are coming to attack The Gambia, these are hugely exaggerated,\u201d he says, though a west African military force remains on the ground until the Gambian army is deemed \u201creformed\u201d from the Jammeh days.<\/p>\n<p>There is \u201ca lot\u201d to do in that area, he adds, and extraditing former \u201cJungulars\u201d \u2014 members of Jammeh\u2019s death squad \u2014 requires collaboration with nearby Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, where they are believed to be hiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Looking to the future \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The Gambia, population two million, has had the sad distinction for the last few years of sending the most people per capita across the Sahara and onto the rickety boats that ply the migrant route to Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Too many, like the talented goalkeeper of the women\u2019s national football team, drown along the way. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYouths are risking this journey to Europe. You cannot blame them. They get frustrated to a level that they cannot do anything,\u201d Barrow admits, as a onetime security guard in London himself. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis migration issue is not a Gambian problem only.
