It seems that Kabila and the intelligence service are no longer even concerned about appearances,\u201d Dokolo told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had previously been acquitted in the same case.<\/p>\n<p>Kabila\u2019s chief political rival, the former governor Moise Katumbi, was also convicted of real estate fraud last June shortly after he announced his candidacy to stand in an election to replace Kabila.<\/p>\n<p>That election was originally scheduled for last November but has been indefinitely postponed, triggering violent street protests in 2016 that killed dozens of people.<\/p>\n<p>The government says the delays are due to challenges registering millions of voters.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leaders accuse Kabila of trying to cling to power.<\/p>\n<p>A Congo government spokesman said he was not aware of Dokolo\u2019s conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have repeatedly rejected allegations that Congo\u2019s justice system is targeting Kabila\u2019s opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Dokolo has emerged in recent months as one of Kabila\u2019s fiercest critics, especially on Twitter, following the president\u2019s refusal to step down when his constitutional mandate expired in December.<\/p>\n<p>After Wednesday\u2019s verdict, Dokolo wrote on Twitter: \u201cI have just inaugurated a $400 million factory.<\/p>\n<p>Kabila has condemned me to one year in prison over a plot of land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also posted a photo of himself alongside Angolan Defence Minister Joao Lourenco, the ruling party\u2019s candidate to succeed dos Santos in an election next month, writing that Lourenco has \u201ca deep mastery of the DRC dossier\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Relations between Congo and Angola, longtime allies, have soured over the past year due to growing Angolan frustration over Congo\u2019s political instability and an insurrection in central Congo that has sent 30,000 refugees spilling across the border since August 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Angola withdrew military trainers it had sent to Congo, where wars at the turn of the century killed millions and sucked in more than a half-dozen neighbouring countries. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a hre=\"http:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2017\/07\/angolan-presidents-son-law-handed-1-year-prison-sentence-fraud\/\"> Vanguard <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kinshasa \u2013 The son-in-law of Angolan President Jose dos Santos said on Thursday that a Congolese &hellip;
