The \u201cto-do\u201d list when moving is long, but cleaning your new home, preferably before furniture<\/a> arrives, is a must for most people.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Try and tackle the dust and grime before you unpack all your stuff. Picture: Realestate.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Here\u2019s a handy how-to guide, with advice from expert cleaners.<\/p>\n Adriana Aziz, operations manager\u00a0at Maid For You, a Sydney-based home cleaning<\/a> company, says it\u2019s always preferable to move into a sparkling clean home \u2013 whether it\u2019s a new build or established.<\/p>\n \u201cHomes which have been vacant for any period of time can accumulate dust and other nasties, such as excessive pollen and other particle build-up, that can not only be hazardous to the respiratory system, but also irritate eyes and exacerbate health conditions, like asthma,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Aziz says it\u2019s best to clean a property when empty, to ensure all nooks and crannies are reached.<\/p>\n \u201cFurnished homes can obscure dirtiness,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Movers can hire professional cleaners or tackle the task themselves.<\/p>\n Rowena Jongejan, owner of Queensland cleaning business Family Clean, says the biggest benefit\u00a0of hiring a professional is efficiency.<\/p>\n \u201cWe clean for a living, so we\u00a0know all the tips and tricks in the book. Hiring a good professional cleaner also means you can\u00a0expect a very high standard,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Jongejan says professional cleaners \u201cdo it all in a day and get it out of the way\u201d, working \u201ctop-down\u201d and focusing on wet areas, like the kitchen and bathroom, before moving onto living areas, then bedrooms.<\/p>\n When it comes to DIY, be strategic, she says.<\/p>\n \u201cFor folk trying to tackle it themselves, do the kitchen first, because odds are you have the most junk to unload here, then the bathroom, because you have to shower<\/a>, then bedrooms \u2013 if there isn\u2019t time, sleep on your mattress<\/a> if you need to \u2013 then do the rest the next day,\u201d Jongejan says.<\/p>\n Aziz says walls and floors also need special attention.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen moving in, it\u2019s a good idea to first wipe down the walls, then use a cleaning solution \u2013 we highly recommend Sugar Soap \u2013 to spot clean any outstanding marks.\u201d<\/p>\n After the walls are washed down, mop, after a quick vacuum. \u201cBefore you start, you need to ascertain what the best chemical is for the floor type,\u201d Aziz says.<\/p>\n \u201cWood floors, linoleum and stone floors should be cleaned using the manufacturers\u2019 recommended cleaning solution, otherwise you\u2019ll leave the surface streaky and unpleasant looking.<\/p>\n \u201cFor these floor types, it\u2019s not recommended to use vinegar or any ammonia-based solution. Most of the time, a few drops of dishwashing liquid will suffice.\u201d<\/p>\n Using the right products also makes a difference, Aziz says.<\/p>\n \u201cFor bathrooms, Ajax Professional Bathroom Power Cleaner is awesome for cleaning surfaces and getting rid of both hard and soft soap scum.\u201d<\/p>\n For toilets, try Easy Off Bam Power Cleaner Toilet Bleach and Hygiene liquid toilet bowl cleaner. Windex is a great ammonia-free window cleaner, offering value for money, plus it\u2019s easy to use and dispose of.<\/p>\n For floors, Power Force Protect\u00a0\u2018n\u2019\u00a0Clean Hospital Grade Disinfectant is a \u201ccheap, effective anti-bacterial,\u201d Aziz says.<\/p>\n \u201cAjax Spray and Wipe is a great all-purpose surface spray.\u201d<\/p>\n
