To stem the tide of building collapse\u00a0in Lagos and other parts of the country, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called for collective responsibility from professionals in the built environment\u00a0and members of\u00a0the public.<\/p>\n

The group said the collapse of buildings have become a serious challenge\u00a0in the country, especially in Lagos area and therefore requires urgent actions\u00a0so that these unfortunate incidences do not occur anymore.<\/p>\n

Lagos Branch Chairman of NSE, Mr. Johnson Akinwande who disclosed this at the 2017 yearly lecture\/awards and induction ceremony, held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), urged Nigerians to patronise qualified professionals in their projects.<\/p>\n

\nThe General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Oladotun Lasoju, an engineer, who spoke on the topic: \u2018Prevention of Collapse of Building- The Collective Responsibilities\u201d, said\u00a0Lagos State government has employed additional 310 professionals to ensure building control and development function for statewide coverage.<\/p>\n

According to him, the state government\u00a0is leaving no stone unturned towards ensuring that an end is put n the building collapse because of its colossal cost to the state and the nation at large.<\/p>\n

Lasoju, who was represented by Bayo Amosun, called for citizens\u2019 participation to ensure that that illegal building or renovations are reported to the authority in order to achieve zero tolerance to building collapse in the state.<\/p>\n

In a related development,\u00a0NSE\u00a0has solicited the placement of its members in top management positions in\u00a0order\u00a0to ensure proper recognition and welfare of engineers in private and public organisations.<\/p>\n

Such recognition, the society said, would enhance engineers\u2019 performance towards the nation\u2019s economic development. Vice Chairman of the NSE Apapa Branch, Sunny Ejeje made the call, shortly after he led members of the branch to a facility visit to the Honeywell Flour Mill Plc, Apapa, and Lagos.<\/p>\n

He stressed that given the roles of engineers as critical stakeholders to the nation\u2019s industrial development, they should be accorded their rights of place in the scheme of things starting\u00a0with appointments to top management positions.<\/p>\n

Ejeje said the relegation of engineers in top management positions in many establishments have resulted to decline in career development thereby robbing the nation of the expected expertise.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile a chemical engineer, Dr. Olorunwa Tijani has canvassed for the adoption of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) of food waste technology as a sustainable waste management system in Lagos state.<\/p>\n

AD is a series of biological processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material such as food waste in the absence of oxygen and producing an end product of biogas, which can be combusted to generate electricity.<\/p>\n

Tijani who is also the head of department of planning, research and statistics, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) noted that the lack of existing data on waste management and poor region technology makes it important to adopt an inexpensive wastes management system.<\/p>\n
