Bright paint colors:<\/strong> \u201cCan we please get over the bright colors\u2014pink, lime green\u2014especially in kids\u2019 bedrooms?\u201d says\u00a0Reba Haas, a real estate pro with RE\/MAX Metro Eastside in Seattle, to realtor<\/a>.com\u00ae. Such shades scream to buyers: \u201cLong weekend of painting<\/a>!\u201d she adds. On the flip side, don\u2019t go too extreme with the neutrals. Too much white in the bedroom can be \u201ctoo sterile and harsh on the eyes\u2014which is not the relaxing vibe you want,\u201d adds Jamie Novak, an organization expert and author of \u201cKeep This Toss That.\u201d<\/p>\n 2. Cluttered shelves: <\/strong>Entire walls of bookshelves\u00a0are not very inviting, designers say. \u201cOpen shelving can give the room an airy, spacious look, but it often turns into an eyesore due to clutter,\u201d says Novak. Novak suggests leaving one or two shelves open and arranged neatly with books or other objects. Fill the rest of the shelves with baskets and bins of belongings, careful not to over-clutter.<\/p>\n 3. Towering pillow piles:<\/strong> Excess pillows don\u2019t scream luxury. \u201cDecorative pillows that span and cover the whole mattress<\/a> are just too much,\u201d says Anna Shiwlall, an interior designer at 27 Diamonds in Los Angeles. For most beds, limit the pillows to the ones you sleep on and then a bolster or square European pillow.<\/p>\n 4. Overstuffed rooms:<\/strong> Pay attention to furnishings size and scale. \u201cIf there\u2019s too much in a room or the bed is too big, the room will feel claustrophobic,\u201d\u00a0Amber Dias, an interior design<\/a> consultant with Showhomes near Sacramento, Calif., tells realtor.com\u00ae. Too little furniture<\/a>, on the other hand, can make your room look too bare and more like a college apartment. Strike a careful balance.<\/p>\n 5.\u00a0Thick drapes: <\/strong>Designers recommend removing thick curtains. \u201cOverly drapey drapes on windows and canopy beds require a lot of vacuuming to keep dust at bay,\u201d says\u00a0Carol Marcotte, the designing expert at Form & Function in Raleigh, N.C.
