While the national homeownership rate decreases, ownership rates among Hispanics are defying the trend with steady rises.<\/p>\n
The Hispanic homeownership rate grew to 46 percent last year, topping previous highs of 45.6 percent in 2015 and 45.4 percent in 2014, according to the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate<\/a> Professionals\u2019\u00a02016 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report.<\/p>\n More than 7.3 million Hispanic households owned their homes in 2016, 330,000 of which were from new households formed in 2016. That comprises 38 percent of all households formed, according to the report.<\/p>\n \u201cThe significance of a strong desire for homeownership cannot be overstated,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n The majority of Hispanics surveyed say they view homeownership as a wealth-building vehicle and vital for families with children.<\/p>\n But financing<\/a> continues to be a big challenge. Hispanics were denied mortgages in 2016 at a rate of 17.3 percent, about 9 percentage points higher than non-Hispanic whites.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile the Hispanic market has outgrown the \u2018niche\u2019 segment designation, the housing<\/a> industry is just beginning to fully recognize its significance to the vitality of the overall market and is responding with products and services that are more relevant to the needs of Hispanic consumers,\u201d according to the report.
