Forty-two percent of homes sold in February were listed<\/a> for less than a month across the country, according to the latest data release from the National Association of REALTORS\u00ae. Properties, on average, stayed on the market for 45 days last month, down significantly from a year ago when the nationwide average stood at 59 days.<\/p>\n\n

Some hot markets\u2014notably in California\u2014are seeing homes sell much faster than the national average.<\/p>\n\n

The metro areas where listings<\/a> stayed on the market the shortest amount of time in February, according to inventory data from realtor<\/a>.com\u00ae, are:<\/p>\n\n

  1. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.: 23 days<\/li>\n\t
  2. San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif.: 27 days<\/li>\n\t
  3. Vallejo-Fairfield, Calif.: 33 days<\/li>\n\t
  4. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Wash.: 36 days<\/li>\n\t
  5. Boulder, Colo.: 37 days<\/li>\n<\/ol>

    Home buyers must stand ready to face the competitive market this spring, NAR President William E. Brown warns. He emphasizes it\u2019s important for buyers to get a preapproval<\/a> from a lender<\/a>, know their budget, and begin talking to a REALTOR\u00ae early on about their housing wants and needs.<\/p>\n\n

    \u201cHomes in many areas are selling faster than they were last spring,\u201d Brown says. \u201cA buyer\u2019s idea of a dream home in a popular neighborhood is probably the same as many others. That\u2019s why they\u2019ll likely have to decide quickly if they see something they like and can afford.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
