The downtown resurgence is reaching across the country. In the post-World War II era, Americans fled urban areas in favor of the suburbs. That left many downtowns to face some neglect, rising crime, and industrial decay, realtor<\/a>.com\u00ae notes in a recent article. But it\u2019s a new day for the American downtown.<\/p>\n Read more<\/strong>: Not Exiled on Main Street<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Redevelopment since the mid-1990s are putting more downtowns back on the map. Vacant office buildings are being transformed into loft apartments and empty storefronts are becoming trendy cafes. More major companies are moving their headquarters back to downtowns too. All of this combined, property values are getting a boost.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople, young ones especially, love\u00a0historical buildings that\u00a0reintroduce them to\u00a0the past,\u201d says\u00a0Dan Cort, author of the book Downtown Turnaround<\/em>. \u201cThey want to live where they can walk out of the house, work out, go to a caf\u00e9, and still walk to work.\u201d<\/p>\n Realtor.com\u00ae\u2019s research team delved into the data of the nation\u2019s 200 largest cities to find the downtowns that are seeing the most growth lately. They considered such factors as residential population growth of downtowns since 2012; the number and growth of restaurants and retailers; vacancy rates; number and growth in jobs; and home price<\/a> appreciation since 2012.<\/p>\n The following cities made realtor.com\u00ae\u2019s top seven (listed<\/a> along with the median home prices in each downtown as well as home price growth):<\/p>\n 1. Pittsburgh<\/strong><\/p>\n 2. Indianapolis<\/strong><\/p>\n 3. Oakland, Calif.<\/strong><\/p>\n 4. Detroit<\/strong><\/p>\n 5. Columbus, Ohio<\/strong><\/p>\n 6. Austin, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n 7.
