The Minister made the call at the\u00a0opening ceremony of the African\u00a0Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions\u00a0Working Group on Environmental\u00a0Audit, AFROSAI WGEA, on\u00a0Tuesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Mohammed noted that except an\u00a0environment audit was carried out\u00a0member countries of the commission\u00a0it would be difficult to address the negative\u00a0impact on the environmental.<\/p>\n
Lake Chad Basin Commission is\u00a0made up of Cameroun, Chad, Niger\u00a0and Nigeria.\u00a0She said: \u201cThe quest for sustainable\u00a0environmental management is\u00a0a global concern, as the impacts of\u00a0climate change, high rate of deforestation,\u00a0loss of biodiversity, land degradation,\u00a0desertification, and flooding<\/a> are\u00a0staring us in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n The Minister averred that the government\u00a0will continue to provide the\u00a0enabling environment for the commission\u00a0to tackle the negative impact\u00a0associated with the residing of Lake\u00a0chad saying that the \u201cprotection of\u00a0our environment is the responsibility\u00a0of all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n Fielding questions from journalists,\u00a0the Acting Auditor General of the\u00a0Federation, Mrs. Florence Anyanwu,\u00a0noted that failure of member states of\u00a0Lake Chad Basin Commission, LCBC,\u00a0to implement past reports on the state\u00a0of Lake is responsible for the state of\u00a0the lake.<\/p>\n Anyanwu urged LCBC memberstates\u00a0to pool resources together to\u00a0commence action in the region.\u00a0She disclosed that the region will\u00a0soon commenced the audit of the\u00a0River Niger in order to avoid a repeat\u00a0of what happened in the Lake Chad\u00a0Basin.<\/p>\n In her goodwill message, the Chair,\u00a0AFROSAI WGEA, Mbah Acha Rose,\u00a0reiterated the need for African countries\u00a0to work together to address the\u00a0challenges posed by environmental\u00a0degradation.<\/p>\n While lamenting the degradation\u00a0of the environment, Acha Rose\u00a0suggested that organisations whose\u00a0activities impact negatively on the environment\u00a0should be made to pay for\u00a0their actions.<\/p>\n This is just as she canvassed good\u00a0governance through transparency\u00a0and accountability.<\/p>\n \u201cIn this regard, good governance is important in ensuring that commitment taken in the area of environmental protection and sustainable development produce credible results,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
