Kaduna in landmark deal<\/h2>\n\nA new co-operation deal between Nigeria Mortgage<\/a> Refinance Company Plc (NMRC) and Kaduna State government will soon deepen mortgage penetration and promote home ownership in the country.<\/p>\nKaduna in landmark deal<\/strong>. The deal, in which NMRC endorsed via the execution of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Kaduna State government, is part of the state\u2019s determined and structured efforts to institute a strong investment climate for affordable home ownership for its citizens.<\/p>\nThe agreement among others includes providing affordable housing<\/a> for citizens through the government\u2019s planned development \u2013 Millennium City Project as well as a commitment to support the provision of single digit mortgages through the creation of a sinking fund for citizens and public servants in the State.<\/p>\nThe agreement was executed at Government House by the Kaduna State through the Deputy Governor, Bala Bantex, an architect, with the expressed mandate of the Executive Governor of the State,\u00a0Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who was unavoidably absent, and on the part of NMRC by the Managing Director\/Chief Executive, Professor Charles Inyangete.<\/p>\n
A Steering Committee comprising representatives of the NMRC and the Kaduna State government was inaugurated to administer the execution of the terms of the agreement. Representing the Kaduna State Government on the Committee will be the Senior Adviser to the Governor, Jimi Lawal, the Commissioner of Finance, Suleiman Kwari, and the Commissioner for Housing, Works and Transport, Hassan Mahmud and the Legal Adviser to the Governor, Aisha Dikko.<\/p>\n
Representing NMRC on the Committee will be Dr. Chii Akporji, Executive Director for Policy Strategy and Partnerships, Kehinde Ogundimu, Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, and Abel Owotemu, Manager, Corporate Strategy.<\/p>\n
Key among the Committee\u2019s immediate mandates will be the realisation of affordable mortgage provision and housing construction in Kaduna State, inclusive of a proposed collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, NMRC member banks for the setup of a mortgage interest rate intervention fund, among other initiatives.<\/p>\n
In his remark, the Deputy Governor noted that the partnership, apart from enabling affordable housing<\/a> provision also presents a tremendous opportunity for the administration of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to meet critical and strategic initiatives in job creation and poverty alleviation of its citizens.<\/p>\nBantex said: \u201cHome ownership is one of the critical paths to migrating citizens out of poverty\u201d, and re-stated the state government\u2019s commitment to lifting its citizens out of the poverty trap through intervention in three key sectors \u2013 agriculture, mining and housing.<\/p>\n
In noting the prevalent challenges to providing affordable housing, including market interest rates and dearth of affordable housing supply, the Deputy Governor stated that the Government is quite delighted at the opportunity to partner with NMRC to address these challenges, and to speed up the adoption and passage of the draft Kaduna Mortgages Foreclosure<\/a> Bill based on NMRC\u2019s Model Mortgage and Foreclosure Law.<\/p>\nHe commended the efforts of the Counsellor to the Governor, Mr. Jimi Lawal and the NMRC team in bringing the consultations and engagement to fruition through the signing of the MoU.<\/p>\n
In his response Prof. Inyangete thanked the state government and the key stakeholders that made the partnership reality. Professor Inyangete restated NMRC\u2019s commitment to supporting the people and government of Kaduna State in working together to break down the encumbrances to mortgage and home ownership in the state.<\/p>\n
