Parents are having a tough time saving money. Fifty-one percent of parents recently surveyed say their mortgage<\/a> was having a \u201cmajor impact\u201d on their ability to save, according to Bankrate\u2019s Money Pulse survey for February.<\/p>\n Read more<\/strong>: Buy a Home With No Monthly Payments?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201cIt\u2019s probably not as much about the mortgage as it is that stage of life,\u201d says Jonathan Smoke, realtor<\/a>.com\u00ae\u2019s chief economist.<\/p>\n Homeowners with children are likely to be in their early 30s to mid 50s and have many financial goals. They’re not only tending to the needs of their children but also saving for college and retirement, maintaining a home, and paying the mortgage.<\/p>\n Jim Sahnger with Schaffer Mortgage in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., says parents may need to change how they think of mortgage payments: It\u2019s not just another form of paying off debt but it\u2019s a form of savings.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you look at it from the aspect of you\u2019re building equity, that\u2019s obviously important,\u201d Sahnger says.
