REALTORS® Showcase Political Influence

The National Association of ® has embarked on a multiweek effort to promote and celebrate the role REALTORS® play in politics and public policy across the United States.

REALTOR® Advocacy Month, which launched last Thursday and continues until May 27, is divided into three themed weeks, each built around one of the key pillars of the REALTOR® Party: Vote, Act, and Invest. The REALTOR® Party was established to leverage the collective voice of NAR’s more than 1.2 million members.

During each week, state and local REALTOR® associations will have the opportunity to draw attention to their advocacy efforts, including encouraging their members to support pro– candidates and elected officials, as well as educating estate professionals about key issues. NAR is inviting REALTOR® associations to share photos and videos of their activities on social media and is providing graphics and other resources at realtoractioncenter.com/realtoradvocacy.

The first week of REALTOR® Advocacy Month, which continues through Friday, is designed to help associations emphasize to real estate professionals the importance of voting and knowing where their elected officials stand on issues important to the real estate community. Week two (May 14–20), which centers on activism and community outreach, coincides with the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in Washington, D.C., which is expected to bring nearly 9,000 real estate professionals together to strategize and visit their congressional representatives. The final week of REALTOR® Advocacy Month (May 21–27) is built around political fundraising activities, including the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC), NAR’s bipartisan effort to support candidates and issues at the local, state, and federal levels.

REALTOR® associations are encouraged to engage in voter registration drives, community outreach projects, and educational programs about ballot issues and other policy matters in which the industry has a voice. Other initiatives for REALTOR® associations to promote during REALTOR® Advocacy Month include meetings with elected officials and Phone-A-Friend for RPAC phone bank events. One of the nation’s top trade association political action committees, RPAC raised more than $60 million in 2016 and has already raised more than $17.5 million this year.
